How can architecture influence the way we live? How does language influence urbanism? Is the world today ready for Neom?

In the exhibition ‘Zero Gravity Urbanism: Principles for a New Liveability’, a controversial & revolutionary concept in architecture & urbanism, diverse large-scale models, aerial plans & audio-visual projections of four of the ten Neom regions so far disclosed, Sindalah, Trojena, The Line, and Oxagon, located in the hot northwest of Saudi Arabia in the province of Tabuk, were shown.

Beyond The Line, Sindalah, one of the most significant projects supporting Saudi Arabia’s tourism strategy covering an area of around 840,000 m², is the first of a group of islands under development & will include a marina with 86 berths for yachts up to 75 meters & offshore buoys to accommodate super yachts up to 180 meters.

According to an extensive report from the Wall Street Journal in July 2022, this megalopolis, which will comprise the most ambitious construction in our history with mirrored glass facades, has an initial projected cost of 1 trillion euros & will be invested by the Saudi Arabian government through its own sovereign wealth fund. Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince, Prime Minister & Chairman of the Board of NEOM, is committed to making this horizontal skyscraper, the centerpiece of NEOM, the largest global economic center.

Located just 17 hours’ sail from the Mediterranean, the island will include a beach club, yacht club & three Marriott hotels as part of its Luxury Collection branded accommodation offering. In words of Jerome Briet, Marriott International’s chief development officer for Europe, Middle East & Africa, Sindalah will become the first physical showcase for NEOM, which is expected to open soon. A beach resort will offer a mix of 70 rooms, luxury suites & one-, two-, three- & four-bedroom private pool villas. The second project, located in the heart of the business district & marina, is dedicated to 115 one, two & three bedroom suites. On the Autograph Collection Hotels accommodation, it offers 66 villas, suites & rooms.

Sindalah is also expected to become a popular golf destination by offering golf enthusiasts the 5,920-metre par 70 Sindalah Golf Course.

With its exceptional range of amenities, state-of-the-art marine facilities, strategic location & extraordinary natural scenery with one of the most beautiful coral reserves, Sindalah is expected to establish itself as one of the world’s most captivating destinations & one of the most sumptuous Red Sea resorts off the northwest coast of Saudi Arabia in the future. And it is expected to start welcoming guests in early 2024.

But what is NEOM?

Neom, on the shores of the Red Sea, a gigantic & superb urban mega-project being built from scratch in the province of Tabuk in the hot northwest of Saudi Arabia. Hyper-connected cities, marinas, international airport (aerotropolis), business zones, research centers, resorts, all for its residents to dare to explore the immediate future.

Supporting Saudi Vision 2030, NEOM will feature hyper-connected cities, ports & sports facilities, leisure, tourism complexes, enterprise zones, and research centers.

NEOM sources predict that all of these ambitious mega-projects will be completed by the end of this decade, but many pundits believe this is unfeasible; rather, they propose that they will not be completed for another 50 years.

Given that decades of oil have made the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia one of the world’s top twenty economic powers, reducing the country’s economic dependence on fossil fuels is one of the goals by diversifying its multi-billion dollar investment programme (the big landing in Spain with the purchase of a 9.9% stake in Telefónica is one example).
