07II18 – BARCELONA, SPAIN.
Welcome to the winter season balls of Sweet Matitos.
The Catalan aesthetic statements for the next Autumn-Winter 18.19 period took place last week in my home town. 080 Fashion Week’s 21st edition in Barcelona was full of specialist journalists, loyal fans and web surfers ready for action and was held in the breathtaking architecture & ornamentation of the Europe’s biggest restored architectural modernist set after a complex rehabilitation begun in 2009: Sant Pau’s Hospital, a city garden within the Ensanche borough.
Up there, I had a sparkling appointment with ‘The Matitos’: Francesc Maristany and Matías Jaramillo. In this tour under a careful production of ESMA projects headed by a tireless Esther García, the fascination of these two visionaries by the symbolism and their inspiration in Paris’Haute Couture shows led them to stage an enchanted forest to tell us a story into four chapters.
All the details were under control, except for the quantity of spontaneous applause they were to elicit from the audience, such a fanciful and tricky tribe as the fan-effect the social networking sites sponsor, capable of converting in mainstream any whim.
Grey as winter, a myriad of timid reddish autumn leaves was among cleaned leafless trees conquering the setting as they framed the model’s onset backed all by a mysterious fog wrapping the scene to give way to two pipers suitably decked out for opening and closing the show to their tune.
‘As every year’, they point out, ‘our female lead, a familiar woman, retires to her country house to prepare to enjoy the great event of the new year’sBall’, asserts Matías with a solemnity that brings me a smile. ‘She will ride horses there and walk through the area on Great Forest line; she will look after her plants in the greenhouse dressed in flowers of Winter Garden on tweed fabrics’, he continues; ‘at tea time, dressed in Tea Room clothes, in the villa’s living room by the roaring fireplace to come at night a little overdressed on Silver Night‘s formal dress’.
Heat colours don’t fail to dent and are the best antidote to the lack of winter light. This couple has bet for facing the sharp cold with an outright chromatic joy: a range of greens, reddish and tans as the dominant colours surrounding landscape during season stepping to stardom in New Year’s Eve: the shiny dark blacks and greys with highly hand embroidery and applications. In addition, ‘the Matitos’ have crowned accessories as an essential part of the collection: thick tights, scarves, hats with feathers, large bows, long leather gloves, velvet above-knee boots and fur collars. Matías and Tito’s passion for life and family and the respect they feel for Mother Nature manifests once again in this second collection, Winter Ball Season, which updates the Hollywood tastes of the 50s.
In the digital globalisation age of the influencers, nobody has been able to capture the power of Autumn/Winter season as Sweet Matitos did with a pristine purist outcome, in line with designers’ dreams and lifestyle.
As to whether fighting my peculiar battle backstage with an Organization’s irrecoverable overweening foolish to chat with them was worthwhile, I confess yes it was. Being that fashion industry in my Spanish Catalonia, as politics and culture, is experiencing difficulties, I do my best to become a part of the internationalization of Grup Met, the lords and rulers of the Spanish affordable luxury.
I conceived this analysis under the influence of Burt Bacharach’s music at top volume during a Saturday rains from an idyllic palace of my beloved Italy in Venice in a nostalgia outburst. And I do admit that I could not choose the best time or place or artist.

UN CHUTE DE BUEN ROLLO

Bienvenidos a la temporada invernal de bailes de Sweet Matitos.
080 Barcelona Fashion Week Edición 21ª. La pasada semana de la moda catalana celebrada en el conjunto arquitectónico modernista del Hospital de San Pablo, una ciudad jardín entre el Ensanche barcelonés, tuve una cita brillante con ‘los Matitos’: Francesc Maristany y Matías Jaramillo. En este circuito y bajo una meticulosa producción de ESMA Proyectos capitaneada por una infatigable Esther García, la fascinación de estos visionarios por la simbología y su inspiración en los pases de alta costura de París les llevó a escenificar un bosque encantado para contarnos una historia a través de cuatro actos.
Todos los pormenores estaban bajo control, salvo la cantidad de aplausos que arrancarían a sus espectadores, una tribu tan antojada y esquiva como el efecto ventilador que patrocinan las redes sociales, capaces de convertir en corriente cualquier voluntad.
Invadían la atmósfera una infinidad de tímidas hojas ruborizadas de otoño cercadas por inocentes árboles deshojados, grises como el invierno, que flanqueaban la aparición de las modelos, arropado todo por una enigmática neblina que envolvía la escena y que dio paso a dos gaiteros escoceses engalanados convenientemente para abrir y cerrar el desfile al ritmo de su melodía.
‘Como cada año’, puntualizan ambos, ‘nuestra protagonista, una mujer familiar, se retira a su residencia de invierno a prepararse para disfrutar del gran acontecimiento del baile de Año Nuevo’, afirma Matías con una solemnidad que me provoca una sonrisa. ‘Allí, montará a caballo y paseará por sus parajes con la línea Great Forest; en su invernadero cuidará de sus plantas ataviada con flores de Winter Garden sobre tejidos de espiga’, continúa; ‘una vez en la salita de su villa y al calor de la chimenea, tomará el té -envuelta con atuendos de Tea Room– y llegará a la noche hecha un figurín vestida de gala con Silver Night’.
La pasión de Matías y Tito por la vida y la familia y el respeto que sienten por la Madre Naturaleza se plasman una vez más en esta segunda colección, Winter Ball Season, que actualiza la estética hollywoodiana de los años 50.
En la era de los altavoces influyentes de internet, etiquetados con el anglicismo DI (Digital influencers), nadie ha sabido capturar la fuerza de las estaciones Otoño/Invierno como Sweet Matitos con un resultado purista impoluto, en consonancia con el sueño y el estilo de vida de los diseñadores.
¿Que si valió la pena librar mi particular batalla entre bambalinas con un necio arrogante irrecuperable de la organización por conversar con ellos antes del desfile? Siendo que la industria de la moda en mi Cataluña española, como la política y la cultura, atraviesa un momento complejo, confieso que sí, en dirección a formar parte de la internacionalización de Grup Met, dueños y señores del lujo asequible español.
Concebí este análisis bajo los efectos de la música de Burt Bacharach a todo volumen durante las lluvias de un sábado desde un idílico palacio de mi amada Italia en Venecia en un arrebato de nostalgia. Y, admito, no pude escoger mejores momento ni lugar ni artista.
